Relatively difficult to find in Canada, Mountain horses are a
trail rider’s dream. Their natural four beat gait virtually
eliminates the need to post in the saddle. They are
consistently good tempered, affectionate horses, making them ideal
for young and old alike. We pride ourselves on raising
confident, well mannered foals. We handle them daily, using
John Lyons based training methods. In addition to extensive
ground work, our horses are exposed to a wide variety of obstacles,
terrain and wildlife on the trails, ensuring a well rounded horse
that is truly a pleasure to own and ride.
Most Mountain horses are under saddle and on the trails at the age
of three. In fact, it is challenging to find an affordable six
or seven year old as they are highly prized and not often parted
with. Due to the overwhelming demand for our Mountain horses,
we regularly import carefully chosen youngsters and under saddle
horses. Please contact us for information on horses currently
at our US facilities.
Nickel Back Farm also offers a referral service for anyone
looking at gaited mountain horses. If we don't have your dream
horse, we will gladly refer you to reputable breeders and assist you
in finding the perfect horse. Contact us for a list of
recommended Rocky Mountain and Kentucky Mountain horse people in
Canada and the US.
Leasing
Each year, Nickel Back Farm offers a limited number of riding
horses for lease. The program begins in May and ends
October/November. This is a unique opportunity to experience
riding a rare breed of horse without the financial commitments of
horse ownership. Monthly leases are available to
experienced trail riders only but gaited riding instruction is
available. Preference will be given to clients with natural
horsemanship experience. Please note all lease horses remain
on the farm.

Majic Dancer

Meet Bo-
My Crabbet Arabian gelding - For Lease with Option to Buy
Would be perfect for someone interested in dressage lessons.
This boy has very nice movement with a floating trot that is a
treat to ride. He is 18 yrs old and 100% sound. Just
reaching 15 hh, Bo is a sweet, affectionate horse with
impeccable ground manners. He has been ridden dressage and
jumped in the past, but has led a life of leisure the last few
years due to my progressive arthritis. He is an honest
gelding who responds well to quiet hands. He is well
trained but is best suited for a confident, experienced rider or
would make an ideal companion horse. Click

Rio - Endurance Rider Wanted!
Rio is an 8 yr old,
15'1 Rocky Mountain gelding. I rescued this loving boy
from a less than loving home. He has come a long way from
the frightened horse that leaped out of the trailer 3 years ago.
He is now one of my favourite "performance" rides. Rio is
super charged...he really moves out, and I would love to see him
with an endurance rider. I think he'd give the Arab world
a run for their money! He thrives under an independent
seat and quiet hands...only the most experienced of riders for
this boy please. A soft spoken, gentle person would be
unbeatable on this gelding.

Just look at this face! Absolutely gorgeous three year old
filly, rich chocolate coat and cascading flaxen mane and tail.
She has been under saddle for almost a year. This striking
beauty is a confident trail horse. She is laid back but will
get up and go if you ask her to. She has a very smooth gait
and can can be ridden alone or with other horses. She is used
to cars, bikes and dogs. Registered and Certified RMHA.
This is a flashy filly with show potential. Currently 14.3hh,
should mature to 15hh+. Excellent bloodlines. To
approved, loving, forever home only.

politely for the farrier. He is a friendly boy who plays nice
with other horses. Merlin is an ideal confidence builder who
gaits easily and consistently. He is a solid, remarkably brave
trail horse. This gelding is what Rocky Mountain horses are
all about. Merlin will be available on a monthly lease
